Audi is a German made car. They make cars from super mini size to SUV’s. The company name is based on the surname of the founder August Horch, his surname meaning listen in German—which, when translated into Latin, becomes Audi. Audi is actually a subsidiary of Volkswagon, since 1966. On August 9, 1899, August Horch (1868–1951) established the company A. Horch & Cie. A few years later, he established a second company, Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. The company traces its origins back to 1909. In that year, Horch was forced out of the company he had founded. He then started a new company and continued using the Horch brand. His former partners sued him for trademark infringement, and the German Supreme Court ruled in their favor. Meeting with some friends of his, they were trying to think of a new name. The one friends son, learning Latin, stated that “Horsch” in Latin mean “Audi”. They all agreed on the name, and the first car was produced in 1910.

August Horch left the Audi company in 1920. He went on to a high position at the ministry of transport. He did remain involved with Audi as a member of the board of trustees. Audi was the first German car manufacturer to present a production car, the Audi Type K, with left-handed drive. This was in September 1921. The left-hand drive theory spread. It then became dominant during the 1920s. This is because it provided a better view of oncoming traffic. Audi sales continue to grow and remain strong today. China is their biggest market, their governments car of choice.
