Made from 1959 to 2000, the Mini is a small car that was manufactured by the British Motor Corporation (BMC). It is similar to the Volkswagon Beetle. The Mini was developed because of a fuel shortage caused by the 1956 Suez Crisis. Many variations came from the Mini: Mark I Mini, Mark II Mini, Mark III Mini , the Clubman, an estate car, a Mini pickup truck, a Mini Van, and a jeep type called the “Mini Moke”. Also, the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper “S”, Wolseley Hornet, Riley Elf , Morris Mini Traveler and Austin Mini Countryman.
The distinctive two door car design was especially made for British Motor Corporation. Sir Alec Issigonis designed it. At first, Mini’s were marketed under the Austin and Morris names (Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor). It came into its own right in 1969. In 1961, a race car constructor named John Cooper added to the Mini’s dependability and power.
In the 1980’s it went back to being marketed under the Austin name. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, numerous special editions of the Mini were introduced. In 1994, BMW purchased Mini. They have full control of the Mini today.
