The design for the original Land Rover vehicle was started in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, the chief designer at the Rover Company. Inspired by military jeeps, he started working on a prototype on his farm. He was enthralled with an American World War II jeep he used one summer. The first Land Rover prototype, nicknamed 'Centre Steer', was built on a Jeep chassis. Early vehicle colors were limited to shades of light green only. The first Land Rover was introduced in 1948.
Made in Britain, Land Rover specializes in four wheel drive vehicles. It is the second oldest four wheel drive company in the world. Land Rover has had a number of owners over the years: Leyland Motor Company, British Motor Holdings, Rover, Group, British Aerospace, BMW, Ford, and Tata Motors. From 1958 to 1976, a number of series of the Land Rover were developed and marketed, with much success. The one millionth Land Rover rolled off the assembly in 1976. In 2007, four million Land Rovers were produced. As of 2008, Tata Motors, an Indian company, now owns Land Rover.
