Isuzu started in 1916, the year Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. initiated plans for automobile production. In 1922, Japan made its first car, the Wolseley model A-9. In 1933, the Ishikawajima Automotive Works merged with the Dot Automobile Manufacturing Inc. Their name changed to Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. In 1934, they were renamed Isuzu after the Isuzu River in the Ise Shrine area. Isuzu means ‘fifty bells’. In 1937, the Tokyo Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. Was established. In 1949, it was renamed 'Isuzu Motors Limited'. Their trucks played a major role in the reconstruction of the country after WWII. In 1960 their trucks were fitted with diesel engines.
The first passenger car was produced in 1953, a few years after Isuzu is made the company name. In 1971 an agreement with General Motors is signed. In 1972, the first Isuzu built vehicle was sold in the United States. In 1981, commercial and consumer vehicles are successfully exported to the United States. Isuzu sales peaked during the late 1990’s. Amongst other improvements, their tour bus debuted in 1996. Mid size buses came out in 1999, and in 2000 tour buses emerged. They are one of the oldest companies in the Japanese automotive industry, and have many reliable and loyal people working for Isuzu.
